Preparations for our annual show began on Friday 5th at 2.00 in the big hall. Tables were unfolded and carefully positioned for maximum impact before being covered with white paper. Black staging boards were lined up beneath the stage and then began the tricky job of partitioning and labelling the various sections for vegetables and floral displays.

This year we had participation from local schools. The handwriting and art entries were amazing.
Another first for the society was the craft section and this proved very popular with creativity in abundance. What talented people we have all around us.

The home industries section did not disappoint! A feast for the senses. Deep filled sponges, “melt in the mouth” shortbread, yummy fruitcakes, jams, jellies, chutneys. The judge enjoyed every moment of her task.

In the kitchen it was all happening with salads being plated up for all helpers and judges. The faithful kitchen staff ably led by Annabel, they had the unenviable task of clearing away and setting up ready for the afternoon teas.

The serious matter of judging was completed by 12.00, results were recorded, and points added up for the various cups and trophies.

Our main sponsor was Fane Valley and the show was officially opened by Mr. David Maxwell, BBC Radio Ulster - Gardeners' Corner.

Congratulations to all the prize winners this year, but let’s not forget all those who entered their veg, flowers etc and came away disappointed. Without their aspirations we would not have a show at all. So, I say “Hurray” to everyone who took the time and trouble to “have a go”.
For the 4th year the Dromore Bee Keepers joined us and held their own “Honey” show. Visitors to the show certainly had plenty of variety to hold their interest.

On leaving the venue, patrons had the opportunity to purchase items from the plant tables outside. Most items were donated by our members, and £440 was raised for this year’s charity. The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.

A huge congratulations to our chairman Lettie for her vision of expanding the show., for Ian our amazing treasurer, who oversaw the complete revamp of our show schedule and to Helen, our most capable secretary always at the end of the phone!

And last, but not least, to all our amazing members whose enthusiasm and individual expertise are shared in abundance. I count them all as friends.

So, if you’re thinking of joining, don’t hesitate for a moment. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
